La Casona was originally built between 1585 and 1700, and has housed various Spanish Conquistadors. While it has undergone numerous refurbishments and remodeling over the centuries, the basic Spanish adaptations of basic Inca structural elements have remained intact, and the house has been officially declared a Historical Monument by the INC (Instituto Nacional de Cultura - National Institute of Culture). The layout follows a regular and linear geometry around a central courtyard, and the building itself features gorgeous stone foundations and archways, richly dark wood trimmings, polished wooden and tiled floors, and colorful murals on impeccable white walls.
